EMINEM CROWNS HOME BOY AS HIS EMCEE

Rap superstar Eminem crowned FowL, aka Saffal Tall, an 18-year-old rapper from his home town of Detroit, as the winner of Red Bull EmSee: The Road to 8 Mile final held in the city’s famed St Andrew’s Hall last night.

The contest, modelled on the freestyle rap battles immortalised Eminem’s 2002 film 8 Mile, brought eight young rappers from all over the USA to the motor city to compete for studio time with top producers in the Red Bull Studios in Santa Monica, California.

Judging them was Slim Shady himself plus D12 crew member Mr Porter and his DJAlchemist. Meanwhile, special guests included fellow Detroit native Xzibit, plus DJ Jazzy Jeff (Philadelphia) and Bun B (New York).

'A RAP BATTLE IN DETROIT IS NO LAUGHING MATTER' – EMINEM

The MCs faced three rounds in which they had to impress the judges and win over a tough Detroit crowd by improvising 60-second raps. In round one they had to refer to a series of random images projected on to a big screen, including politicians Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin (both dubbed “bitches”) and actors Gwyneth Paltrow and Robert Pattinson (also “bitches”).

FowL began by appealing directly to the judge: "F*** this battle/Eminem, I need a deal!" but it was this line in round two that dealt the killer blow: "Who would you rather listen to?/Someone who spits the truth/or a n**** with a missing tooth?"

That was enough to win the support of the crowd and that momentum took him all the way to the final where saw off New York MC D.N.A.

"I brought it back to the crib... thank God," Tweeted the Michigan State University student who was also the youngest MC taking part in the competition.

"A rap battle in Detroit is no laughing matter,” said Eminem. “And it seems that FowL took it the most seriously tonight."
