The rapper is well-known for his violent and expletive-laden lyrics, having written songs about murder and drug use. His new album Recovery is due to be released later this month, and Eminem has been talking about his inspiration.
He cites US star LL Cool J as someone he looks up to, adding he loves his job and has no intention of retiring any time soon.
“Hearing LL Cool J made me want to rap, that's what did it for me,” he explained. “Maybe I'll be a sixty or seventy-year-old rapper.”
Eminem – real name Marshall Mathers – made the comments during an interview with UK talk show host Jonathan Ross. LL Cool J was also on the programme, and was more than happy to discuss his career.
As well as releasing many successful albums, the star has also worked in fashion, launched a website and written books. The 42-year-old says he is a lot more relaxed now than he was in his younger days, when he used to spend his money on flashy jewellery and cars.
“I was never addicted to anything... my thing was bling, cars... ten cars in front of my grandmother's house,” he laughed. “Just ridiculous.”
